Davelle is a quaint Japanese cafe on the Lower East Side in New York. Even well into the weekend afternoon, the cafe was packed, but there is limited, non-heated outdoor seating. By pure luck, there was an open table outside and service was friendly and quick.
While the cafe also serves savory items, perfect for a full meal, its toasts and lattes are the perfect afternoon snack.
The toasts are nicely presented and the flavors are delicate and not overly sweet. The bread is toasted lightly to still remain mostly soft.
The berry jam and cream cheese toast ($13 at the time of this post) flavors complemented each other well, though these flavors are a bit standard for the Western pallet. The experience of honey lemon toast ($13) was more unique, and the rind of the thinly sliced lemons added an enjoyable punch; only get it if you enjoy slightly bitter notes.
The star was a black sesame latte with oat milk ($7). The black sesame flavor in latte form, topped with foam, was very enjoyable. The only critique is that the black sesame does settle at the bottom of the cup. The cortado ($4) was solid.
Overall, the experience is worth a try. It’s a fun spot, casual spot for meeting up with friends.
